Over the last week, I have followed with keen interest the burgeoning debate on the various Liberian listservs
about the call for the formation of a neo-progressive movement. There have been attempts from many quarters to synthesize aims and objectives of said movement. Of particular interest to me, however, has been the ongoing discussion of the link between responsible political governance and sustainable economic development.
One
school of thought argues
that “sustainable”
economic development is
impossible without the
“enabling” political
environment. The other
counters that whilst
political governance is
essential in fostering
economic development,
the two cannot be said
to be inextricable.
After all, a proponent
of this school of
thought argues, “Asia
has dictatorships that
are thriving
